New vote in FSM after irregularities in Chuuk

1:36 pm on 31 March 2005

In the Federated States of Micronesia, a new round of voting will be held in the congressional election in the district of Chuuk State following voting irregularities there.

The election office director, Bernell Edward, has this morning written to the incumbent and two challengers to inform them.

The decision was made after discovering a huge discrepancy between the number of signatures on the absentee voters list and the number of ballots in the box.

Mr Edward says there was just one day from when the election was called and the date it was held and some people were unprepared.

"I think its an evidence of disorganisation here, you know, because that's a short time to coordinate. It was made on March 6th, the election is on March 8th."
