Australian High Commissioner in discussions with PNG over security incident

4:04 pm on 4 April 2005

The Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea is in talks with the PNG Prime Minister's office, over future security proceedings at Australian airports.

This follows protest marches being held in Papua New Guinea over last month's treatment of Sir Michael Somare at Brisbane airport.

Protesters have been petitioning the Australian High Commissioner to pay compensation and apologise because the PNG Prime Minister had been asked to take off his shoes during an airport security check.

An Australian Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman, Justin Lee, says the talks focus on the option for Sir Michael to use a different processing channel at airports, reserved for heads of states.
