Guam prison guards placed on leave after jailbreak

10:22 am on 8 April 2005

Five Government of Guam Department of Corrections officers have been placed on 20-day administrative leave at the end of a two-week investigation into last month's escape of three maximum-security prisoners.

The acting director of the Department, Robert Camacho, said the officers were long-time employees and one was a senior officer.

They have been found negligent in the supervision of prisoners leading to their escape.

Mr Camacho also said it's necessary to distance the men from work during the 20-day period, so they can review the charges brought against them.

He said he expected they would all retain legal counsel and that, at the minimum, they could receive a reprimand or termination, based on the result of interviews that he will conduct with them.

Jeffery John Cruz, 43, Frank Pangelinan, 39, and Michael Gumataotao Laguana, Junior, 30 escaped on the 19th of March at approximately 9-9.30 p.m.

Laguana was caught the next day, but Cruz and Pangelinan remained at larger for eight and nine days respectively.

They were back in police custody by the 27th of March.
