Fiji government coalition reportedly shaky

3:59 pm on 8 April 2005

A report from Fiji says the coalition between the ruling SDL party and its junior partner, the Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua, is shaky.

The Radio Fiji report says the Conservative Alliance has accused the government of failing to fulfill its promises.

It says this is why the Conservative Alliance MP nominated to take up the lands portfolio, Manasa Tuqia, declined it.

The Conservative Alliance says they had agreed in a meeting with the government that Mr Tuqia would take up the lands ministry.

A party source is quoted as saying Mr Tuqia had written to the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, asking him to prove that he had fulfilled the promises made by the government.

But, there was no reply from Mr Qarase, which is why Mr Tuqia declined the lands portfolio.

The Conservative Alliance source says they endorsed Samisoni Tikonisau as the new lands minister after Mr Tuqia refused to take it.

The setback in the governing coalition has become public just 15 months away from the next general election.

Details of the alleged unfulfilled promises have not been revealed.
