A new minimum wage comes into effect in Vanuatu at the end of the week

Vanuatu's Internal affairs minister, George Wells, has confirmed that a new minimum wage of just over 200 US dollars will become effective at the end of the week.

The Port Vial Presse says the new level is minimum wage is 55 US dollars higher than the existing rate, which has been in force for more than ten years.

At the launch of the new minimum wages board, Mr Wells pointed out that the last change to the minimum wage occurred at the time of the civil servants' strike.

In spite of that increase being ten years ago, Mr Wells said some employers were still only paying a monthly wage of 74 US dollars.
