Fiji to establish diplomatic ties with Kuwait

10:14 am on 28 April 2005

Fiji has decided to establish full diplomatic relations with Kuwait because of the large numbers of Fijians working there.

This follows Kuwait's policy of not allowing an honorary Fiji consul to be based there.

Fiji's minister for foreign affairs, Kaliopate Tavola, says having full diplomatic relations will safeguard the welfare of Fiji citizens working in Kuwait, Iraq and the Middle East.

Fiji's ambassador to Kuwait will be based in Suva and visit the Arab nation about four times a year.

Mr Tavola says the establishment of diplomatic relations will provide protection for Fiji citizens and promote the employment of Fijians in Kuwait and the Middle East as a whole.
