Taiwan's president due in Marshall Islands

4:41 am on 30 April 2005

The president of Taiwan, Chen Shui-bian, is due to become the first president to make a state visit to the Marshall Islands.

Following his arrival tomorrow, and a state dinner hosted by the Marshall Islands President, Kessai Note, Mr Chen will on Monday attend Constitution Day ceremonies.

He is due to address the Marshalls parliament and then open a Taiwan trade fair.

More than 40 media will be covering the visit to Majuro, and then to Kiribati and Tuvalu, in what's believed to be the biggest media contingent to arrive in the Marshall Islands since the first US nuclear tests of the 1940s.

To help with final preparations, government employees were given time out from work yesterday to ensure the island is spotless.
