12:33 pm on 2 May 2005

The Marshall Islands has held its first national HIV/AIDS Forum in Majuro.

Government statistics indicate that there have been just 11 confirmed HIV cases in this country of 55-thousand people since the mid-1990s.

This figure includes at least several Americans from the US Army's missile testing range at Kwajalein in the early 1990s.

The Marshalls Health Minister Alvin Jacklick spoke at the Forum, praising people with HIV, for talking about their situation in an effort to halt its further spread.

Mr Jacklick said no Marshall Island elected leader other than himself, was present at the meeting.
