About 300 activists have demonstrated in the Indonesian province of Papua, to protest against a decision made by the United Nations in 1963, which gave Indonesia control of the area.

The demonstrators gathered yesterday outside the government offices in the provincial capital, Jayapura.

They called for an international review of the UN's decision to let Indonesia govern Papua from May 1st, 1963.

The protesters said the move, by the UN Temporary Executive Agency, ignored the will of the Papuan people and went against an earlier agreement in New York.

Indonesian troops had invaded the former Dutch colony, a year before.

The protesters have also called for a review of the later UN-sanctioned 1969 Act of Free Choice, which made Papua officially part of Indonesia.
