Three seats in Niue election still being finalised

1:31 pm on 3 May 2005

The chief electoral officer in Niue says there are three seats still to be finalised after the weekend elections, including that of the Finance Minister Toke Talagi.

Provisional results indicated Mr Talagi had lost his seat by two votes.

However the electoral officer, Togia Sioneholo, says the final results should be known within two days.

Mr Sioneholo says only 831 people voted in the elections, making some results close.

"That is always expected given the small numbers, the overall total for each candidate would be very close. In the past we have had very close results. In this case, in the common roll six seats it's difficult because of the two candidate, or three candidates, who are very close to whether they will get in or not and that includes the minister of finance."

Mr Sioneholo says if there is a tie, the winner will be found by drawing names out of a hat.
