Head of Fiji's RAMSI contingent says people are still holding back from reporting crime in Solomons

The head of the Fijian contingent in the Regional Assistance Mission says fear is still holding back Solomon Islanders from reporting crimes committed against them.

Romano Tikotikoca, who's also heading the Community Policing Beat in Honiara city, says the fear also stems from the Melanesian culture of silence.

"There exists in some quarters of the community, fear of reporting some of the criminal activities that have been committed of which they have been victimised. That's one thing that I have found and we are trying to encourage members of the community, at least at this moment, now that RAMSI has been here for about two years now, at least not to be afraid of anything but to come out with what they have with them."

Mr Tikotikoca says the Community Policing project in Honiara tries to address the issues and help people overcome their fears.
