More Fiji police off to Kosovo and Liberia

More Fiji police officers are leaving for peacekeeping duties in the Balkans and Africa.

The Daily Post reports a 12-member contingent flies to Kosovo today while a 30-strong force will leave for to Liberia on Thursday.

They will be replacing Fiji police who are returning from the two trouble-torn countries.

The police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, says Fiji police have been described as the best peacekeepers in the world in United Nations terms.

Mr Hughes has called on the departing officers to keep that spirit alive and not drink alcohol.

Earlier the commissioner had disclosed that alcohol abuse was a serious problem within the force and led to a high rate of absenteeism, domestic violence, poor professional performance and poor health among officers.

Mr Hughes made the admission at the national alcohol workshop in Suva yesterday.
