Fiji's former Suva Mayor to appear in court for millions

A Fiji businessman and former Suva mayor is expected to appear in court soon over charges that the company of which he is a director owes millions of dollars in taxes.

The Fiji Times reports that the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA) has filed 37 charges against a director of SUNCOURT Limited, Dhansukh Lal Bhika.

Mr Bhika is charged with tax evasion by omitting details from tax returns lodged by Suncourt Wholesalers Limited, a required under the Income tax Act.

Mr Bhika is also chairman of the state-owned tuna cannery, the Pacific Fishing Company.
