The Samoa government is exploring the possibility of establishing the country's second international airport on the island of Savai'i.

The bid is not only to promote tourism but also to ease access by overseas travellers to Samoa's biggest island.

State-run SBC Radio One reports the Ministry of Civil Aviation is looking at Salelologa Village as a possible site for the proposed airport and a study has been conducted on the environmental impact and financial obligations.

The station said this is part of the plan for the next five years, which is geared towards improvements of air transportation.

The existing international airport, Faleolo, is located on the main island of Upolu.

The current domestic airport on Savai'i service offers flights between Upolu and Savai'i islands and also three weekly flights from Pago Pago in American Samoa.
