The High Court of Solomon Islands has handed down its sentence in the Akao/Anita rape trial after postponing its judgement for two weeks.

Presiding Judge, Justice John Brown, sentenced former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Akao, to 2 years and 6 months imprisonment and former Civil Aviation Director, Michael Anita, to 4 years 9 months.

The case relates to allegations by a Honiara woman that the two men had abducted her in December 1996.

The High Court was told that Anita dragged the woman from the Point Cruz Yacht Club into a vehicle driven by Akao.

Judge Brown found Anita guilty on three counts of rape, two counts of assault and one charge of abduction, while Akao was convicted on one count each of abduction and assault.

The defence is expected to file an appeal within the next few days.
