Uncertainty persists in Wallis over king's standing

Reports from the French territory of Wallis and Futuna say efforts to remove the king of Wallis appear to have failed.

Earlier reports said some royal families had acted against the king, Tomasi Kulimoetoke, after he had given refuge to his grandson who had been sentenced to jail for causing a fatal car accident while driving drunk.

The king had also ordered the French administrator to leave the island over the stand-off.

Reports say the king claims that there has been a customary pardon and settlement over the death.
