The man leading the team of monitors in Bougainville for the Papua New Guinea province's autonomy election, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, has praised voters for their enthusiasm and election officials for a well run poll.

Most voting has been completed with counting expected to happen from Tuesday next week at three sites - Buin, Arawa and Buka.

Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, the Speaker of Fiji's parliament, says his overall impression after a week of voting is that the historic election has gone very well.

"With the voters, the variation in age from the new voters those who are just 18 and a lot of them still at school, they were all eager to participate in this historical occasion. So the overall picture has been one of enthusiasm and of wanting to participate in the first election after many years of turmoil."
