The ruling party in Fiji has stressed at a weekend convention that it is a pro-Fijian party not a racial party.

A party spokesman, Jale Baba, said he was surprised at the number of Indian supporters who turned up at the meeting in Suva.

The Fiji Live news site quotes Mr Bale as saying Indian supporters were coming out in numbers because they realised what the party could do for them.

He said SDL would contest all seats in next year's elections, including Indian communal seats.
