Counting in the poll for an autonomous government in the Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville will start on Wednesday afternoon.

The elections manager, Mathias Pihei, is predicting results for the 33 open seats, three women's and three ex-combatants constituencies, and the presidency, should be known by Thursday evening.

Voting in the province finished on Saturday evening and all ballot boxes have now been safely transferred to the three counting centres - Buka, Arawa and Buin.
