The chiefs and elders of East Malaita in Solomon Islands have agreed that threats by those who advocate violence on the island is not in the best interest of their people and province.

Solomon Islands police are investigating letters from an alleged militia group threatening the lives of the country's leaders and their families.

Following discussions, the Solomon Broadcasting Corporation says the chiefs and elders said they deplored violence and threats, and declared that East Malaita does not support any agenda that uses such tactics to achieve its objectives.

The leaders said peaceful, face to face dialogue was the only way to resolve differences of opinion.

The leaders also declared their commitment to the rule of law.
