7:58 pm on 7 June 2005

Customs officers in French Polynesia have intercepted two guns, a dagger and a machete due to be taken as baggage on an Air France flight from Tahiti.

Tahitipresse reports the weapons were discovered at Tahiti's Faa'a airport this morning in an X-ray check on hold baggage for the flight to Los Angeles and Paris.

A man described as a Polynesian resident is thought to have been trying to take the weapons to Paris.

He had allegedly hidden them in a package made of two-millimetre-thick aluminium.

Police have seized the weapons and taken the man into custody.
