Fiji's ruling SDL party has selected the coup convict Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure's elder bother to contest the by-election for the seat left vacant by his jailing.

The brother, Ratu Osea Vakalalabure, who is a vice president of the SDL, will contest the Cakaudrove West Fijian seat in a by-election to be held next month.

The SDL's national director, Jale Baba, says Ratu Osea's name would also be submitted to their coalition partner, the Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua, in the hope that both parties would jointly field just one candidate.
