Bougainville assembly member-elect calls for education development

8:07 pm on 8 June 2005

One of the three women in the newly elected assembly in the Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville, Magdalene Itona Toroansi, says education is one of the vital keys to restoring normalcy.

Ms Toroansi says many Bougainvilleans remain traumatised and their situations will need to be approached in many different ways.

She says the government, possibly with church help, will need to set up social service programmes to cater for these people.

And Ms Toroansi says within the formal education system the government will need to provide for the development of technical skills.

"So that is people who graduate out of grade eight, ten or twelve, would have skills training whether in furniture making, agriculture, mechanical, electrical, things like that. So that they are able to use skillss immediately after they leave school."
