Tongan farmers stage tractor protest over consumption tax

4:21 pm on 9 June 2005

Farmers in Tonga have been staging a protest parade of 56 tractors to parliament.

Growers want MPs to exempt agricultural supplies and trade from the Consumption Tax introduced in April.

Mateni Tapueluelu reports from Nuku'alofa.

"The growers have been appearing on TV and say it's impossible for them, as an essential economic sector of Tonga, to bring in money into the economy, when they are being heavily taxed. They requested government to free them from this consumption tax. Government have been saying for the last two weeks they would do something about it when parliament opened last week. They thought that the march would be cancelled but it's going on today."
