The Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has vowed to institute an investigation into recent ethnic clashes in the Western Highlands.

The National newspaper reports Sir Michael was responding to a question in parliament from the Porgera MP Yakka Kappa.

Fighting between people from Enga and Western Highlands province two weeks ago left at least 12 people dead, some of them women and children who drowned trying to cross a river.

Sir Michael said it was a serious matter and it needed attention.
