Fiji PSC warns public servants against joining anti-government march

Fiji's public service commission has threatened disciplinary action against public servants taking part in protests against the government's Reconciliation and Unity Bill.

The threat comes as their union, the Fiji Public Service Association, is discussing joining the Trades Union Congress and civil society groups in a joint protest against the Bill.

The chief executive of the public service commission, Anare Jale, has told Radio Legend that public servants must remain neutral on the issue and show allegiance to he government.

Mr Jale says if unions want to stage a protest or go on strike, they will have to do so without public servants.

Mr Jale also says the commission is investigating the presence of senior army and navy officers in parliament during the reading of the Bill last week and may deduct their pay for being away from their normal place of duty.
