New Caledonia windmills for Fiji

A New Caledonia company specialising in generating power from wind farms has secured an order to supply 37 units to Fiji.

The Fiji Times newspaper reports that the company director, Marc Vergnet, hopes the most recent technologies used by his company could be applied throughout the South Pacific where high cost diesel fuel is used.

The company has already built 22 windmills at Kafeate in the north of New Caledonia's main island and when another 20 are completed they will produce 11 megawatts of power.

It plans to manufacture rotors locally from fibreglass in the small town of Nepoui.
