American Samoa has a new fish processing facility, that's expected to open in a few months.
Pago Pago Commercial Fishing Incorporated has been awarded grants from the US Department of Commerce and Western Pacific Fisheries Management Council for its venture.
It is the brainchild of Elvin Mokoma, the owner of a successful company operating three fishing boats.
The company wants to buy the bycatch of purse seiners and longliners that are discarded by the canneries and sell them.
A consultant for the project Henry Sesepasara, says they hope to secure markets locally, and off island in Hawaii.
The company is negotiating with one of the canneries to produce the canned fish using the bycatch.
