A former mayor of the Fiji capital, Suva, is facing 37 charges of tax evasion amounting to millions of dollars.

The Fiji Times reports that Dhansukh Lal Bhika, the director of Suncourt Hardware, has appeared in the Suva magistrate's court.

But the case has been adjourned till August the 26th to allow the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority to provide disclosure documents to the defence.

Bhika, who is also chairman of the state-owned Pacific Fishing Company, is among other things, charged with willful intent to assist another person to evade tax.
