French Polynesian President returns after first talks in Paris with new French government

The French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, is due back in Papeete tonight following his first meeting in Paris with ministers of the new French government.

After talks with the French overseas territories ministry, he confirmed that the planned review of the autonomy statute has been shelved.

Mr Temaru also raised the prospect of an arrangement for French Polynesia similar to the one in place for New Caledonia which will lead to a vote on independence from France.

Mr Temaru also discussed a new assistance package for the period 2007 to 2017.
