Fiji prepares for possible increase in Chinese investment

4:04 pm on 27 June 2005

A report from Fiji says the country can expect a surge in its Chinese population following weekend talks in Beijing between the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, and the Chinese president, Hu Jintao.

The Daily Post reports that Mr Qarase has assured President Hu of Fiji's continuing One-China policy.

This followed President Hu's concern that Taiwan was trying to influence Pacific island countries to recognise Taipei rather that Beijing.

Mr Qarase says China is interested in investing in Fiji's growing tourism industry.

He says he also discussed the potential for Chinese investment in Fiji's fisheries and forestry industries, as well the manufacture of furniture in Fiji for export to China.

Mr Qarase says all this is likely to result in a Chinese influx into Fiji for both business and pleasure.
