Trial of Fiji transport minister adjourned

2:33 pm on 28 June 2005

The High Court trial of Fiji's minister for transport and civil aviation, Simione Kaitani, and three others has been adjourned again.

Kaitani, Eroni Lewagai, Levani Tonitonivanua and Viliame Sausauwai are charged with taking an illegal oath to join George Speight's failed administration during the coup, for which the maximum penalty is life in prison.

But when the trial resumed today after a week's adjournment because of the illness of one of the accused, Tonitonivanua's lawyer told Justice Anthony Gates that his client had been injured in a road accident yesterday.

Radio Legend says the lawyer, Iqbal Khan, asked that the trial be adjourned till July the 4th.

But Justice Gates has asked for a full medical report to determine whether Tonitonivanua can attend court proceedings.

Justice Gates has also indicated that he may allow the prosecution to continue with the trial without Tonitonivanua and instruct them to confine their evidence only to the three accused present in the court.
