Fiji's second major airport at Nausori near Suva is to undergo a major upgrade to meet international standards.

The chairman of Airports Fiji Limited, Viliame Lega, has told the Fiji Times the upgrade will cost nearly 30-million US dollars.

It will involve building a new terminal to cater for larger numbers of passengers, relocating the air traffic control tower, extending and expanding the runway, and providing more parking space.

Mr Lega says once the development is complete, more international airlines can begin flying to Nausori in line with the growing tourist traffic.

At present Nausori is mainly a domestic hub with only Air Pacific operating services to Auckland and Sydney.
