Fiji police call off sea search for bodies of mudered girls

Fiji police have called off the sea search for the bodies of three teenage sisters killed 18 days ago by self-confessed serial rapist and murderer Dip Chand.

Navy divers and a fishing boat with modern echo sounding gear have been withdrawn and officers of the Police Tactical Response Unit have returned to Suva.

But regular police are continuing their search for the remains of the missing girls on land in case they have been washed ashore.

42-year old fisherman and family friend Dip Chand told police several days after they went missing that he had killed the three Lata sisters, tied them to the anchor of his boat and dumped them in the sea between Rakiraki and Malake Island.

Chand is in police custody awaiting trial for the murders and sentencing for the serial rapes of three other girls between 2001 and last month to which he has pleaded guilty.
