French Polynesia MPs approve terms of reference for nuclear test probe

MPs in French Polynesia have approved the terms of reference for a commission of enquiry into the effects of nuclear testing.

The Tahitipresse government news agency reports the commission of enquiry will look into, as a matter of priority, the consequences of nuclear tests in the Gambier islands.

Several MPs opposing the government said they voted to approve the document but added it needed to be 'depoliticised'.

Philip Schyle said he was doubtful about limiting the scope of the enquiry only to consequences of aerial testing and not land tests as well.

Edouard Fritsch said his Tahoeraa party wouldn't take part in the enquiry, which he described as biased and partial.
