Tongan civil servants waiting for government response to their demands

10:25 am on 21 July 2005

The chairman of the interim-Public Servants Association committe, says he hopes the Tongan government will reply to their demands later today.

Finau Tutone, who is part of group formed to set up a PSA, says workers are upset over how much top public servants get paid.

Mr Tutone says his committe asked the government to drop the new pay rises that came into effect this month and look at a fairer pay scale.

He says the government has until today to satisfy their demands.

"We call a meeting for all civil servants at 5 o'clock, hoping that time a reply from the cabinet will come and then we are going to discuss there. Then we will decide the next step that we are going to take. Most of them, they said, OK, all pens down."

Mr Tutone says although there is no official membership of the PSA, between 1,500 and 2,000 civil servants have turned up to meetings and signed a petition calling for the changes.
