Popularly elected Tongan MPs back striking public servants

3:13 pm on 22 July 2005

Tonga's Peoples' Representatives have added their weight to two thousand public servants striking over hefty pay rises given to senior public servants.

Around 1-thousand public servants gathered at a rally in Nuku'alofa today to protest against the rises.

The public servants have gone on strike over the payments, and have called for all public servants to receive an increase.

Our correspondent, Mateni Tapueluelu says the rally heard from Peoples' Representatives who are supporting their cause.

"It is backed by Peoples' Representatives who were giving speeches there, I have also been told by Peoples' Representatives that they are going to walk out from Parliament when Parliament resumes next Monday. That would add some impact and momentum."
