A Bill which would empower village mayors to issue citations for littering has been introduced in American Samoa's House of Representatives.
Giving village mayors, or pulenuu, the power to issue littering citations has often been cited as a solution to keeping American Samoa clean.
The Bill has been written by Representative Puletuimalo Koko.
Under the legislation, village mayors will have limited police powers to issue citations for littering, pollution, tampering with monuments and graffitti.
The Bill says village mayors would only be able to exercise these new powers in their own villages, and they would not have the power to arrest offenders.
