Taiwanese fishing company pulls out of Cook Islands

10:16 am on 25 July 2005

The Taiwanese fishing company Gilontas has decided to pull its fleet of five longline fishing boats out of the Cook Islands.

The Gilontas fleet began fishing last October, and was to offload its catch exclusively to Cook Islands Fish Exports.

Marine secretary Ian Bertram told the Cook Islands News that it was mainly the cost of fuel that had led to the fishing company's decision.

Mr Bertram says the pullout won't lead to job cuts at the CIFE factory.

Meanwhile, the minister for marine Tupou Faireka says he will hold talks with an official delegation from Tahiti later next month to discuss arrangements that will see fishing licences given to French Polynesian boats and vice-versa.
