Report to work today, Tonga's acting PM urges civil servants

10:16 am on 25 July 2005

The acting prime minister of Tonga, James Cecil Cocker, is urging all civil servants to report to work today.

Around 1-thousand public servants rallied in the capital, Nuku'alofa on Friday to protest against a hefty wage rise for senior public servants.

Around two thousand of the Kingdom's five thousand public servants have gone on strike over the payments, and have called for all public servants to receive an increase.

Cabinet says the Public Service Commission is addressing the issue as a matter of urgency and must complete work on what it calls 'salary anomalies' by Wednesday this week.

The government says it's moving forward in dealing with complaints regarding the salary revision, and it says it will need everyone's cooperation to arrive at a solution that is widely accepted and, as it puts it, wisely implemented.
