There are calls for a maximum security prison to be built in Samoa after the recapture of a dangerous escaped prisoner.

Memebers of the public questioned by the Samoa Observer and a senior district court judge, Vui Clarence Nelson, say its time the country considered a maximum security facility.

The escaped prisoner, who had been convicted of rape charges, had been in prison for two weeks before he escaped from a work party at a prison plantation, armed with a bush knife.

This escape and other earlier incidents have resulted in questions being asked about allowing some inmates to take part in work parties.
