PNG Bishop says AIDs campaigners should promote abstinence rather than condoms

A Catholic bishop in Papua New Guinea has taken issue with the the National HIV/Aids Council promoting condom use to control the spread of the disease.

Bishop J Paul Marx says with the escalating level of infection it seems the Council is panicking and is not promoting anything but the condom.

He says it should also be advocating abstinence as it has in the past.

"To advertise like this means that that in some ways is giving in and that is the normal way of life, and so this promiscuity which is the cause and the breeding ground of HIV/AIDs - this is just encouraged in some way."

Bishop J Paul Marx says the Council should also be promoting faithfulness within marriage.
