Solomons authorities turn down nickel mining renewal application

9:43 am on 5 August 2005

The Solomon Islands Minister of Mines and Energy, Basil Manelegua, has rejected an application from Pacrim Resources for a renewal of their prospecting licences for nickel in Isabel Province.

Mr Manelegua told the company it had not complied with mining regulations.

He says these include Pacrim Resources not meeting an order from the Minerals Board to pay a deposit of 411 thousand US dollars and failed to provide reports on its activities.

He says the company was spending only half the expenditure that it had committed to spend.

The Minister also says that Pacrim Resources had never received approval from the Isabel Provincial Government nor the Bugotu House of Chiefs.
