Efforts by the American Samoa company StarKist to recruit staff in Samoa is being supported by the Samoan government.

Starkist Samoa's tuna cannery is the largest private employer in the territory, and officials met with the Office of Samoan Affairs yesterday.

The company is offering to reward anyone who brings in a qualified applicant for employment with two cases of wahoo.

Since June 2005, Starkist has experienced a dramatic drop with its labor force, especially fish cleaners.

Samoa News reports Starkist is also considering the possibility of hiring inmates to work at the company.
