Dozens of Second World War veterans head to the Pacific this morning to pay tribute to their comrades who fell during the War in the Pacific.
More than 570 died during the Pacific Campaign waged against the Japanese 60 years ago.
The delegation includes the Veteran Affairs Minister, George Hawkins, Defence Force personnel, and 80 veterans.
They will travel to New Caledonia and Solomon Islands to attend wreath-laying ceremonies and commemorations for those who died.
Lieutenant Commander Andrew Lincoln from the Defence Force says it is important for all New Zealanders to recognise the sacrifice of the veterans.
