French Polynesia teachers' strike averted - report

1:57 pm on 16 August 2005

Reports from French Polynesia say an agreement has been reached to avert a strike by primary school teachers.

The Tahitipresse news agency says the education ministry announced that the deal would be signed this afternoon.

While the details of the settlement are yet to be released, it follows a strike warning that would have prevented the scheduled start of the school year.

The teachers union had taken issue with the new school calendar and teacher training issues.
