Tokelau realistic about how much aid New Zealand can provide - now seeking other donors

The administrator of Tokelau, Falani Aukuso, says the atolls are being realistic in seeking aid funding from outside New Zealand.

The New Zealand territory is about to become self governing and intends approaching Japan, the European Union, and others, to supplement its trust fund.

The fund, which has been in place now for five years, is intended as an independent source of revenue which can be used to improve the quality of life of Tokelauans.

The fund, of just over 11 million US dollars, has been built up by New Zealand and Tokelau itself.

Mr Aukuso says there have been hopes that New Zealand would provide more aid, but says it's unrealistic to expect the mainland to meet all of Tokelau's requirements.

"Of course, there is that wish, but at the same time Tokelau is proud and has tried, under its own steam, given the limited resources, to look after itself to the greatest extent possible."
