The project manager for an HIV AIDS awareness programme aimed at police working in the Pacific region says it will also benefit the community.

The project is being developed by the Wellington-based Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police Secretariat together with UNAIDS.

The Project Manager, Inspector Paula Stevens, says the programme will not only educate police but help stop the spread of HIV AIDS in the community.

"What it will do is it will ensure police officers in their communities are knowledgeable about HIV and AIDS, that their policing policies are consistent with the prevention messages that are being given in the community."

The project follows a meeting held earlier this year with 21 Pacific police services.
