The New Zealand Army has completed a two-week operation to blow up old explosives in Tokelau.

Tokelau officials asked New Zealand to help get rid of explosives which had been left on Nukunono Atoll since the early 1990s.

The ordnance disposal team leader, Staff Sergeant Matt Dyson says they were able to remove the explosives and transfer them to a remote location for disposal.

Staff Sergeant Dyson says they were then able to destroy the explosives in an environment where they could guarantee the safety of local people and their infrastructure.
