Air Vanuatu workers on strike

1:43 pm on 22 August 2005

Hundreds of international and domestic travellers have been stranded in Vanuatu this morning after airline workers went on strike.

More than 100 Air Vanuatu workers in Port Vila and Luganville started striking at 4:30 this morning in an effort to reach arbitration over their grievances.

The secretary general of the national workers union, Ephraim Kalsakau says workers are frustrated over a breakdown in discussions about a collective bargaining agreement, job security and severance pay conditions

But he says the airline's CEO, Terry Kerr, has phoned him from Sydney with an offer of immediate negotiations, provided the strikers return to work this afternoon...

"When he gets back to Vila this evening, we will be holding meetings with him tomorrow plus with the shareholders of the company. And our members have agreed in principle, so I'm waiting for him to call me back and our workers should be back at work."
